Most people are aware of the fact that they need to see their eye doctor to undergo a routine eye exam on a yearly basis. However, it is very important that individuals take care of their eyes on a regular basis to ensure that their vision is kept at its prime in between visits. Here are three things that you can do between those eye exams to properly care for your eyes and to promote healthy vision:
1. Indulge in a Good Diet.
As with most things, there are good foods and bad foods for your eyes. According to the American Optometric Association, your diet should be full of certain antioxidants in order to improve your overall eye health. This will help to reduce your risk of developing eye diseases, such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Some of these antioxidants that you should include in your diet include lutein and zeaxanthin, which can be found in eggs and green leafy vegetables, as well as vitamin C, which can be found in most fruits and vegetables.
2. Protect Your Eyes.
Most people know that they need to wear sunglasses during the summer to protect their eyes from the harmful UV rays from the sun. However, many don't realize that this is just as important during the winter and when they are in the shade, as the rays from the sun can still harm your eyes. The rays can still get to your eyes when it is cloudy, in the shade and from bouncing off of the sun.
Then, when performing work in the yard, performing repairs on the home, playing sports or otherwise putting yourself in a high-risk situation where injury could be caused to the eye, it is very important that you wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from any flying debris.
3. Remove Your Eye Makeup Nightly.
Aside from not wanting to wake up looking like a raccoon or zombie and scaring off your significant other, eye makeup can greatly irritate the skin and even clog your glands and hair follicles that are located around the eyes. This will likely result in the formation of styes or hordeolums, which will require professional treatment.
Make sure that you take at least a little bit of time each and every day to take special care of your eyes with the aforementioned tips. It doesn't take a lot to make a huge difference in promoting healthy vision. Don't forget to also schedule and keep annual appointments with your eye doctor, as these check-ups are the key to long-lasting vision health.
